Studying Modular Forms & Arithmetic Geometry

A modular form is constrained both by holomorphicity and by transformation under a group action. Milne builds the analytic and geometric framework through the upper half-plane and quotient surfaces. Stein emphasizes explicit expansions, bases and Hecke computations. These routes can be paired: a calculation becomes more informative when you can explain the transformation law and the behavior at a cusp that make it legitimate.

What to work on

  • Check the upper-half-plane action of SL2(Z) and state a modular transformation law.
  • Relate translation invariance to a q-expansion and distinguish holomorphy from meromorphy at a cusp.
  • Compute low-order coefficients of level-one Eisenstein and cusp forms.
  • Apply a Hecke coefficient formula with an explicit normalization.

A starting text

Modular Functions and Modular Forms (Elliptic Modular Curves) — James S. Milne. Read section 1, Preliminaries, and section 2, Elliptic Modular Curves as Riemann Surfaces, for the upper half-plane and quotients. Section 4, Modular Functions and Modular Forms, begins on printed page 48; section 5, Hecke Operators, begins on page 67. Use section 3 on elliptic functions only as needed.

Choosing what to read

First derive the formula for the imaginary part of a fractional linear transformation and use it to understand the half-plane action. Check the weight and group before comparing two forms. Compute several Fourier coefficients, but distinguish matching a finite list from proving equality. Use a dimension or structure theorem only after stating its level and weight assumptions. When a Hecke matrix appears, identify its basis and explain which theoretical operator the matrix represents.

Modular Functions and Modular Forms (Elliptic Modular Curves)

Understand quotient geometry before treating q-expansions as formal series.

How it reads
Analytic and geometric development through modular curves and functions.
What it expects
Complex analysis, group actions and the relevant algebra.
What to keep in mind
The companion exercises below come from Stein; they are not claimed as a Milne solution set.
Practice
Companion practice at https://wstein.org/books/modform/stein-modform.pdf: Public exercise sets verified in Stein's author-hosted book; public worked solutions were not verified. These exercises are a separate source from Milne's reading notes. Section 1.6 Exercises, printed page 11: start with exercise 1.1 on the half-plane action. Section 2.8 Exercises, page 33: exercise 2.3 concerns Eisenstein-series coefficients and 2.8 concerns a Hecke matrix.

Modular Forms, a Computational Approach

What it expects
Linear algebra, number theory and introductory modular-form definitions.
What to keep in mind
Algorithms need the definitions and structural hypotheses supplied by the theory.
Practice
Existing course-study evidence verifies exercise sets 1.6 and 2.8, printed pp. 11 and 33; public worked solutions were not verified.
Edition, reading range and source

Sections 1.1-1.4 and 2.1-2.4, inherited from the course-study alternative; no fresh check in this task.

Other ways into the subject
  • Modular Forms: A Computational Approach — William A. Stein, with an appendix by Paul E. Gunnells. Sections 1.1-1.4 for definitions and congruence groups; 2.1-2.4 for level-one forms, the structure theorem, the Miller basis and Hecke operators. Use alongside Milne when explicit q-expansions and algorithms are the priority.

Practice

Level-one modular-form exercises. Section 1.6 Exercises, printed page 11: start with exercise 1.1 on the half-plane action. Section 2.8 Exercises, page 33: exercise 2.3 concerns Eisenstein-series coefficients and 2.8 concerns a Hecke matrix.. Public exercise sets verified in Stein's author-hosted book; public worked solutions were not verified. These exercises are a separate source from Milne's reading notes.

Try these before moving on

Try a proof or calculation before opening the hint. These solutions address the checks below, not the exercises in the linked textbooks.

  1. For gamma=[[a,b],[c,d]] in SL2(R), prove Im(gamma z)=Im(z)/|cz+d| squared when Im(z)>0. Then use -I to show a modular form for SL2(Z) of odd integral weight is zero.

    A hint

Subtract the complex conjugate of the fractional linear expression. For the second part state the transformation law, including its character.

    Work through the solution

Let a,b,c,d∈Ra,b,c,d\in\mathbb R satisfy ad−bc=1ad-bc=1, and z∈Hz\in\mathbb H. The denominator cz+dcz+d is nonzero: if c≠0c\ne0 its zero is real, while if c=0c=0 the determinant condition gives d≠0d\ne0. Since the coefficients are real,

    az+bcz+d−azˉ+bczˉ+d=(ad−bc)(z−zˉ)∣cz+d∣2.\frac{az+b}{cz+d}-\frac{a\bar z+b}{c\bar z+d}=\frac{(ad-bc)(z-\bar z)}{|cz+d|^2}.

    Divide by 2i2i to obtain Im⁡(γz)=Im⁡z/∣cz+d∣2>0\operatorname{Im}(\gamma z)=\operatorname{Im}z/|cz+d|^2>0.

For a modular form of integral weight kk on the full group SL2(Z)\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb Z) with trivial character, the law is f(γz)=(cz+d)kf(z)f(\gamma z)=(cz+d)^k f(z). The matrix −I-I fixes every zz and has cz+d=−1cz+d=-1, so f(z)=(−1)kf(z)f(z)=(-1)^k f(z). If kk is odd, this gives 2f(z)=02f(z)=0 for every zz, hence f=0f=0 over C\mathbb C. Trivial character is essential to this particular conclusion; cusp holomorphy is not needed for the vanishing argument.

If this was the sticking point:

Already comfortable with this? Skip the action and definition review if you can prove the first check and explain the cusp condition. Skip coefficient practice if the second check is routine; assess Hecke operators separately through Stein's exercises.
